Payne Particulars 2005

We are glad to welcome you to our cyber greeting page. We hope this Christmas Season finds you happy and healthy and celebrating family and friends. We want to make sure we wish you a MERRY CHRISTMAS!

The rumor is true! Doug and Deedy are moving to Dallas in the spring. Doug is now Tatum Partners Managing Partner for the Dallas area. It is a great opportunity for him and with the business potential there, he will be able to really put his skills to good use! He starts full time there Jan 2nd and is in the process of locating their new office somewhere in North Dallas. We will be house shopping in the area nearby in the next few months.

This means that Deedy will be giving up her teaching job in Scottsdale. :-( She is looking forward to new opportunities in Texas (At least she keeps telling herself that!) After 11 years at Mountainside Middle school, she took a job working at the district level in the Professional Development Department. She misses the school and the kids, so leaving her job will not be as difficult as it might have been. Stay tuned to find out what she discovers to keep her busy in Dallas. We are hoping Nonny Pat will join us there - the weather is fairly mild and she and Deedy can find lots to do. They can learn a new language (Howdy y'all!) and get their hair done (aka BIG HAIR!).

Cliff is finishing up his last year at Washington University. He has enjoyed St Louis but will be leaving the Arch to head to the Big Apple in July. After internships in London last spring and New York City this past summer, he has decided the investment banking field appeals to him. He will be joining the Real Estate Investment Banking Division at Merrill Lynch after he graduates. He is looking forward to living in the city and has several friends who will be moving there, so he won't be lonely during the few hours of the day he will NOT be working! To celebrate, he is headed on two ski trips in the next few weeks - to Canada and Colorado!
Betsy is in her second year with Team One Advertising as an Assistant Account Executive working on the Lexus account. She worked on the launch of the new Lexus IS and is now involved in the launch of their new hybrid. She has been busy traveling this year for work as well as pleasure. In March she and Deedy went to London and Paris to see Cliff, and she just returned from Copenhagen where she was visiting a "friend." (BTW - She had a "wonderful" time!) She continues to enjoy being a "California Girl" but we won't be surprised if she heads to the Big Apple as well in the coming year.
DJ has just moved into a new house. He and his dog Samson are getting settled as we head into the holidays. The Payne tradition of collecting and "pack ratting" is alive and well in Tempe! He loves his sales job with Phoenix Remanufactured Transmissions and also waits tables at Charleston's several nights a week. He will hold down the fort in Arizona and give us a place to stay when we make our frequent visits back here. He has been busy with the move and once he unpacks and arranges all his "stuff," he says he will never move again!

2004 brought sadness along with joy. Our beloved Nonny Ruth passed away after a short, sudden illness last January. We took her back to Ohio to be with Dale where we were able to share cherished memories with the Ashtabula connection. We also celebrated her life in Tucson at a memorial at Tohono Chul in the desert landscape she so loved. We continue to miss her greatly and treasure all the times we were able to share with her here on earth. As DJ said, "Popper Dale rode in and carried her off on his horse and they are together again."

In June our wonderful little Bichon left us. Snowball joined our family 16 years ago when we moved to Scottsdale. Needless to say, the "empty nest" syndrome has hit us hard but we are keeping ourselves busy sailing, skiing and traveling. We continue to enjoy our Freedom 28 sailboat which we keep in the marina at Lake Pleasant. We sailed to Catalina Island (charter only - no trailering allowed!) and also enjoyed a sail on the east coast in Narragansett Bay this summer. We have begun to explore the lakes in Dallas and are planning on continuing our sailing there. (There is a little concern though when the Texas web site describes a lake as "not being known for its beauty!")

Doug has logged many miles this year with weekly trips to Denver (which will cease when we are both in Dallas! YEAH!). Deedy has done her fair share of traveling as well and had a great trip this summer to Missoula, MT to enjoy Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks, courtesy of the Furey Camping and Rafting Company. Nancy's crew, Nonny Pat, and our cousins Debbie & Denise also joined us, along with Sue's family who hosted us in fine Montana style.

Deedy & Doug celebrated their 30th Wedding Anniversary on December 20th. We will be taking a sail to Catalina Island aboard a 72' sailing yacht next month to "bless" this momentous occasion.

We look forward to hearing from all of you. Please take a moment to email us and let us know how you have been. We wish you all of the best for the New Year and we hope to see you in our travels soon.
