The Payne
household is much quieter this year. That "empty nest" syndrome
has hit. We are even reverting back to previous activities to regain our
youth! One such activity is sailing. This summer we sailed our sailboat
(22' Columbia) to Catalina Island.

Doug is
working harder than ever with Tatum CFO. He has recently taken on Denver in addition to Phoenix, and
travels there part of each week. We are looking forward to some skiing
up there this winter!

Deedy is
still teaching 6th grade science and will be finished with her
Educational Technology Masters in June. She race walked in her very
first 5K race in November and has found a new exercise she can do with
friends!

Cliff, 19, is a
happy, hard-working freshman at Washington University in St Louis. He is
in the Olin Business School and is looking at majoring in finance and
accounting. He was able to rehab his knee well enough to be recruited
onto the Washington football team as a linebacker. His latest exciting news
is that he was named the Wash U Kemper Foundation Scholar, which not
only gives additional scholarship money, but also secures him an
internship each of the next three summers! He will be in a
different city each year, ending up in Chicago in 2005.

Our
California Girl turns 21 in January! Betsy is in her third year at UCLA and has decided to move
into an apartment this winter quarter. She continues to pursue a degree
in English and Political Science. This past summer she had an internship
for a Public Relations firm in Santa Monica. Her exciting news is that
she was named to the UCLA Advertising Team. This is a team of 38
students who compete against other universities. Their task is to come up
with an ad campaign for the Toyota Matrix. Her focus is the area of Promotions.

The most exciting news is that
DJ, 22, is now pursuing a teaching degree at ASU! (Mom is
beaming!) He has an apartment near
campus and will be taking classes and interning at a nearby elementary
school in January. He survived his four education classes this
fall, and although the program will take two more years, he is excited about
his career choice. He has a new puppy, Samson. He says that this
will teach him responsibility, and so far, so good! Along with
school and puppy-rearing/training, he also waits tables at the nearby Outback
restaurant.
